Background:

Kema Chikwe is married to Dr. Albert Chikwe Ihekweazu, from Imo State. Mother to Naeto C, and Somachi Chikwe. She is a former Nigerian Federal Minister of Aviation, a prominent politician, women’s rights. Hails from Egbu autonomous community Imo State Nigeria.

Education:

Dr. Kemafo Nonyerem Chikwe attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1973 and a Master’s degree in English in 1974. She also obtained a certificate in International Relations from the University of Sussex, UK, in 1977.

Profession & Achievements:

Sen. Chikwe has had a successful career in politics, holding various positions of authority in the Nigerian government.

She began her political career in the 1970s as a member of the Nigerian National Students Union. She later became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 1992. She served as the Senate Committee Chairperson for Women Affairs and Youth Development and was also a member of the Senate Committees on Environment, Health, and Education.

In 1995, Chikwe was appointed as the Minister of Aviation under the administration of General Sani Abacha.

She served as the Minister of Aviation from 1999 to 2001, under Preseident Olusegun Obasanjo, where she led several significant reforms in the aviation sector, including the establishment of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Chikwe also served as the Minister of Transport from 2001 to 2003. She was Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland from 2004 to 2007, she became the first woman to serve in that position.

In 2007, she contested for the gubernatorial ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, but was not successful. She later served as the Director-General of the Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation in the 2011 presidential election.

She founded the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) in 1999, a non-governmental organization that focuses on empowering women and promoting gender equality in Nigeria.

She has also authored several publications on women’s rights, including “Women and Politics in Nigeria”, “Democracy and Women’s Political Empowerment in Nigeria, “Women of My Era,” “Village Boys,” “The Voice of a Woman,” “Igbo Women and Economic Transformation in Nigeria, “Political Communication: An Annotated Bibliography”, and “Kame Chameleon Tours the Garden.”

She is a passionate advocate for women’s rights and empowerment and has been actively involved in promoting women’s participation in politics.

Recognition & Awards:

  • Chikwe’s contributions to the development of Nigeria and her advocacy for women’s rights have earned her several recognitions and awards.
  • In 2001, she was conferred with the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by the Nigerian government.
  • In 2004, she was honored with the prestigious Zik Prize in Leadership.
